Program Partners
The Need
This Youth Leadership Development Camp was initiated to help equip students entering middle and high school and their parents, with the proper tools to handle conformity. The students needed to learn how to create and execute a successful goal setting process for the upcoming school year, along with boosting their confidence, self-esteem, and motivation to maximize their talents and abilities.
The Impact
Our community has witnessed the students’ progress into successful college graduates, trade school graduates and working young adults. Each student learned how to focus on key concepts, by developing written goals with measurable action steps. They were scored on their current knowledge of leadership skills with a pre-course and then tested on that same knowledge with the profile post course. They understood the importance of developing a vivid mental picture of his/her future direction and the process to customize and tailor achievable and measurable outcomes. Rising Star’s proven process instills these behaviors along with additional return on investment through prevention and reduction of risk behavior.

I worked with “Coach” at my first job out of college, he was my supervisor at one point and is now my lifelong friend. He attends Reid Temple and is also in the marriage ministry with us. Coach is a great mentor to students and a very genuine person. He extends himself beyond camp and is known for showing up to support the students throughout the year at their sports or other activities.
During the leadership development camp, students learn many strategies (i.e., goal setting, teamwork, attitude, etc.) to help them be successful in school and in life. After the summer camp, he holds quarterly follow-ups with the kids to see where they are with their goals and continue to encourage them. One thing he does I really like at the follow-up meeting, is connects students to professionals in their career interest for further mentoring or job shadowing opportunities.
